Italian Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)

Are you planning to move to Italy for more than 90 days? Have you received a visa and need assistance in applying for a residence permit?

All non-EU citizens planning to stay in Italy for more than 90 days must apply for a Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno). It’s important to note that an Italian short-stay visa (Schengen visa) cannot be converted into a residence permit.

This permit allows foreign citizens to reside in Italy according to the terms and conditions of their visa. Generally, the Residence Permit is valid for the same duration as the visa.

How to Apply for a Residence Permit

  • Upon arrival in Italy, you must apply for the residence permit within 8 days at the local immigration office (Questura).
  • The permit is typically issued for one to two years, depending on your visa type, and can be renewed.

Path to Permanent Residency and Citizenship

  • After five years of holding a temporary residence permit, you can apply for a permanent residence permit.
  • After ten years of living in Italy with a permanent residence permit, you become eligible to apply for Italian citizenship through naturalization.
